Tips for improving your spoken English

You would like to improve your English-speaking skills and have tried the traditional methods without much success. Here are some tips to get you started and adopt a more organic and intuitive approach to your learning experience.

1. Input

Increase your input, expose yourself to the language as much as you can : make English -real English- a part of your life. And you don't even need to move to an English-speaking country to do that. Here are a few ideas to get more input in English :

  • Change the language of your devices to English.
  • Watch English-speaking television channels at home, watch anything you like as long as it is in English.
  • Download podcasts in English and listen to them. Some podcasts might provide the transcript. If so, listen to the podcast and then compare it with the transcript.
  • Listen to songs in English.
  • Read magazines, newspapers or online articles, books, e-books, etc. Read anything you like.

2. Output

Work on your output by practising the language. Not always easy if you don't know any native or advanced speakers. Here are some tips to help you.

  • Do more activities in English. Take a cooking course in English or join a book club. Anything you enjoy doing, make sure you do it in English. Using English to talk about things you enjoy will make practising a more positive experience.
  • Take an English training course. For more effective results, opt for one-on-one language coaching which is far more efficient than a group course. Trust my experience on that.
  • Read a magazine or newspaper article out loud. Repeat sentences you hear on the radio, on TV or on a podcast out loud. This is a great way to practise your pronunciation by making sure that your English sounds great without worrying about vocabulary, grammar or sentence structure.

3. Enjoy the process

Have fun, everyone loves having fun and things are much easier to do when they are fun. Do fun things in English and you will want to carry on doing them. You will look forward for instance to getting back home and watching the next episode of your favourite series in English. Or getting excited about the new book you've just purchased or the new podcast about your favourite hobby. Just think of the things you love and try to do them in English. Remember that having fun while you learn is when you learn the best!
